Rory Toomey completed his architectural registration in 2006 and established his practice in early 2007. His choice of architecture was inspired by his love of drawing and making things, and by his passion for art and the environment, built and natural.
Rory’s practice has completed numerous buildings and interiors in the residential, hospitality, retail, commercial and speculative fields. His work has been published in SMH DOMAIN and GOOD LIVING supplements, Reader’s Digest Design Annuals and ARTICHOKE Magazine.
Past clients include FOX MEDIA GROUP, LANDCOM, MELT Bar & Venue, DETOUR Espresso Bar, THE CRABBE HOLE at Bondi Icebergs, THE WINE POINT at Birkenhead Point, KATIPO Cafe, BOOTLEG Bar, KUDU LOUNGE Bar, CAFE ROSSO Surry Hills along with numerous private residential commissions in NSW, Victoria and the ACT.
Graduating with honours from UNSW in 1997, Rory worked with some of Sydney’s most respected designers. His apprenticeship was served in the studio of eminent Sydney modernist Neville Gruzman where he worked on and off for almost ten years. In 2000 he spent a year in Sam Marshall’s studio where he collaborated on the Wilkinson Award winning Marshall Warehouse project amongst others. While working at Architect Marshall, Rory designed the Wentworth Falls House for a private client and, in 2001, he began a 14 month period based in the Blue Mountains outside Sydney, documenting and assisting ‘hands on’ in building the house. A second apprenticeship was the result, this time under master builder Richard Downes.
Upon completion of the Wentworth Falls House in Autumn 2002, Rory joined Adam Pearson Design as a project architect. In his almost 5 years with the firm he was made an associate and worked on a broad range of project scales, types and budgets, all with a strong commitment to design innovation and built-in sustainability.
Rory lives in inner Sydney with his wife, their dog and an extensive collection of vinyl records, musical instruments and vintage furniture.
